What is the Rizin FF MMA league?

Rizin Fighting Federation, known as Rizin FF or simply Rizin, is a Japanese mixed martial arts organisation. It was created to carry on the philosophy and spirit of its predecessors, Pride FC and Dream. As a result, it’s known for its excellent presentation, including elaborate opening ceremonies and ring walks.

The name comes from Raijin, the Japanese god of lightning, the word for the rising sun, and the letter Z, meaning "ultimate." Rizin stands out from other promotions, such as the UFC, because fights take place inside a traditional boxing ring rather than a cage. It also uses the Pride ruleset, often holds grand-prix single-elimination tournaments, and sometimes hosts kickboxing events.

How the Rizin FF MMA league format works

Rizin usually holds fewer than 10 events per year, including New Year’s Eve shows that showcase some of its best fighters. The main, numbered Rizin fight card events feature top fighters and championship fights. Rizin Landmark events highlight rising prospects and upcoming talents in Japanese MMA. Meanwhile, Super Rizin are special events, featuring marquee fights between crossover stars and held in a unique location.

Rizin also holds Grand Prix tournaments, which typically feature 8 fighters competing in a knockout bracket. These tournaments often span multiple events rather than taking place on the same night. A fighter needs to win each tournament bout to advance to the final and be declared the Grand Prix champion. However, the GP champion isn’t the same as the regular division champion.

Rizin FF structure follows the standard MMA bout format, with each fight scheduled for 3 5-minute rounds. Fighters get a 1-minute break between each round. During the fight, fighters try to finish their opponent, but judges also score each round using the Dual Must System. This scores the fight round by round, judging the impact of the fighting. However, if the scores for the round are tied, the judges use the 3D Total Must, which looks at Damage, Dominance and Duration for the total fight. This means that the fighter who came closer to finishing the fight is favoured over the fighter who simply had more activity.

There are currently 8 men’s weight divisions and two women’s divisions in Rizin FF MMA. Men’s divisions go from Flyweight up to Heavyweight. Meanwhile, women compete in Atomweight or Super Atomweight. However, non-MMA fights such as kickboxing and special rules have their own weight classes.

Rizin fights take place in a traditional boxing ring rather than a cage. In addition, MMA fights use the classic Pride rules, which allow kicks, stomps and knees to the head of a grounded opponent.

While the Rizin FF format is mostly regular MMA bouts, it also hosts other combat sports and major tournaments. In Grand Prix tournaments, fighters compete over successive rounds to determine the champion. These tournaments usually use special rules or different bout lengths.

How fighters qualify

Rizin signs fighters based on their record, making them an offer based on their talent and experience in other promotions. This could be in regional promotions or major fighting organisations worldwide.

Based on their performance, Rizin fighters can improve their ranking in a division and eventually earn a title shot. However, Grand Prix tournaments also let fighters qualify and advance by beating their opponents.

Rizin operates as a fighting federation rather than a typical promotion and closed league system. This means it also allows matchmaking across different organisations.

Young amateur fighters in Japan can also earn a place in Rizin through the Rizin Koshien program. If they’re not already professional MMA fighters, they can apply, attend tryouts and compete in a tournament to secure a debut fight.
