What is the Serie A?
Serie A is the leading professional soccer league in Italy and one of Europe’s top three leagues, behind only England’s Premier League and Spain’s La Liga . Dominated by legendary European clubs like Juventus, Inter, and AC Milan, Serie A has long attracted the very best soccer players in the world.
In this guide, we’ll explain what to expect for Italy’s 2024-25 Serie A season and introduce you to the different Italian soccer bets you can place throughout the season at the Stake Sportsbook.
History of Serie A
The Italian Serie A was established in 1898, making it one of the oldest professional soccer leagues in Europe. However, it wasn’t until the 1929-30 season that the competition was established as a round-robin league. Since its inaugural season, the format has changed a lot.
For the 2004-05 season, Serie A was changed to feature 20 teams, and it follows the same format today. Every season, 20 teams from across Italy all compete for a chance to win the “Scudetto” (small shield), so called because the champions wear a small coat of arms on their kit the following season.
Throughout the history of the league, Serie A has witnessed some incredible rivalries between teams and players. The giants of Italian soccer, including AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Napoli, are stalwarts in elite European football competitions such as the Champions League as well as the Europa League. Many Serie A teams also compete in the Conference League.
Inter Milan have spent an incredible 93 seasons in Serie A and are the only team to have played in Italy’s top flight every year since its inception. The Old Lady of Italian soccer, Juventus, are Italy’s most successful team, with 36 titles to their name.
Inter Milan and their city neighbours AC both have 19 titles and 16 runners-up medals apiece - incredible synergy for such fierce rivals. When Napoli lifted the Scudetto at the end of the 2023 season, it was their third Serie A triumph and their first since a Diego Maradona-inspired team won the crown in 1989-90.

Format & Schedule of the 2024-25 Serie A
Serie A is a round-robin soccer league, meaning that every team in the league must play every other opponent in two fixtures, one at home and one away. Teams earn three points for every win, one point for a draw and none for a loss.
At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champions of Serie A, while the bottom three teams are relegated to Serie B. Teams finishing in the top six positions can qualify for European competitions.
Unlike some European soccer leagues, there’s no winter break in the Italian league. Here are the key dates for the 2024-25 season of Serie A:
Opening fixture: 17 August, 2024
Final day of the season: 25 May, 2025
Alongside Serie A, the Coppa Italia runs throughout the season, Italy’s premier knockout cup competition. Last season, Juventus won their 15th Coppa Italia title, beating Atalanta 1-0 in the final.
You can also bet on the Primavera Cup at Stake.com , an Italian youth cup popular with those looking for the next generation of talent coming through the ranks.
Now that you know how Italian football works, it’s time to look at some of your Serie A betting options:
1x2– A straight-up bet on the team that you think will win a Serie A match. It’s similar to a moneyline bet, except you can also bet on a draw.
Draw no bet – A wager on the result of a match that sees your stake returned if it finishes in a draw.
Asian total – This is a bet on the total number of goals, corners or cards in a Serie A fixture. You bet on the over/under but it’s possible to bet on on full, half or quarter lines.
Asian Handicap – A wager on the team you think will win a Serie A match, but with a handicap applied. The team must win by more than the handicap for your bet to win, and you can bet on full, half or quarter handicaps.
Double chance – A bet that allows you to make two selections on a Serie A match (draw and away win, for instance). You’ll win as long as either of your selections occurs.
1st goal – A bet on the team or player you think will score the first goal in a Serie A fixture.
Correct score – A wager that allows you to predict the final score between two teams in a Serie A matchup.
Both teams to score – A simple bet on whether you think both teams will score in a Serie A match.
Halftime/fulltime – A bet on who you think will win the first and then the second half in a Serie A match.
Outright – This is a bet on the outcome at the end of the season, such as which team will be crowned Serie A champion or which team will be relegated.
You can also create a Serie A multi-bet if you want to include multiple selections in the same betting slip, which is a great way to improve your odds while making Serie A bets.

Serie A Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies
Here are some helpful tips to bear in mind as you make your Serie A selections this season:
Always bet with your head and not your heart. - You should consider statistics and form when betting on soccer, so it’s best to avoid bets on the team that you support. We’ve got stats on all Serie A matches and Italian players, including live stats when the games are in-play. Keep an eye on team news too, as the absence of key players has a big impact on a team’s chances.
Consider the home advantage - Always check which team is at home when betting on Serie A matches, as home advantage plays a big role in the outcome of every fixture. Last season saw home teams win 42% of matches while 29% of away teams won their games. Smaller teams can beat bigger rivals when at home, though it’s not a guarantee.
Bet on the over - Last season, Serie A matches saw an average of 2.61 goals per game, so betting on over 2.5 goals could potentially make a profit if this trend continues. While Italy may have a reputation for defensive football, some of the world’s best goal scorers, such as Dusan Vlahovic, feature in Serie A.
