What is the English Premier League?

The English Premier League is the top flight of professional soccer in England. Arguably, it’s the most prestigious soccer league in the world. It attracts the top players and fans from all over the world. From top to bottom, many consider the Premier League the most difficult soccer league.

History of the English Premier League

The biggest clubs in the world play in the English Premier League, including Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, and more. Along with league competition during the season, English teams also actively compete for domestic glory in the FA Cup and the League Cup. Of course, there's also the thrill of European competitions, as the top teams from across the continent play in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.

Star power is in no shortage in the world's biggest domestic league, with the world's top players competing for glory every year in the English Premier League. Superstars such as Martin Odegaard, Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, Son Heung-min, Bukayo Saka, and many more call the Premier League home, doing battle every week during the season for ultimate supremacy.

English Premier League 2024-25 Title Race

For much of the 2024-25 Premier League season, it was obvious that Liverpool was the best team in the league. With Jürgen Klopp retiring after the 2023-24 season, many expected the Reds to take a step back under new manager Arne Slot. However, Liverpool got off to a fast start with 11 wins and one draw in its first 13 matches and never looked back. While Arsenal and Manchester City kept things interesting for part of the season, Liverpool clinched the Premier League title with four matches left in the season, ultimately finishing 10 points ahead of second-place Arsenal. The Reds now have two Premier League titles, far behind record-holder Manchester United, which has won the league 13 times.

2024/25 European Qualification

While Liverpool ran away with the Premier League title, there was a great race for the European spots, many of which weren’t decided until the final day of the season. Arsenal, Manchester City, and Chelsea finished second, third, and fourth, respectively, to claim a Champions League spot. The Premier League also received a fifth guaranteed Champions League spot. Newcastle earned that, finishing ahead of Aston Villa on goal differential, forcing Villa to settle for the Europa League. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season was Nottingham Forest finishing seventh, earning a spot in the Playoff Round of the Europa Conference League. Finally, the Premier League is sending two more teams to European competitions this season. Crystal Palace qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup, while Tottenham Hotspur qualified for the Champions League after winning the Europa League. That means nine Premier League teams will play in European competitions this season.

2025-2026 Premier League Season Format & Schedule

The EPL begins in August 2025 and will run until May 2026. A total of 380 matches will be played over the entire season, including 33 weekends and five midweek match days. As usual, all 20 teams will play a home and away match against every other team for a total of 38 matches each.

When is the Premier League 2024/2025?

The new EPL season kicks off on August 15, 2025. The curtain raiser will be the Community Shield match, held between league champions Liverpool and FA Cup winner Crystal Palace on August 10. The league will end in May, with the final games taking place simultaneously on May 24, 2026.

Which Teams are Playing in the Premier League 2025-2026?

The three teams that joined the league from the Championship last season, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton, were all relegated straight back down, but three new teams will take their place. Leeds United won the Championship title and is back in the Premier League after a two-year absence. Burnley is also back in the Premier League after a one-year absence. Finally, Sunderland is back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2015-16 season, at one point dropping down to League One before making it back up.

The rest of the 17 Premier League teams from last season will remain the same for the 2025-26 campaign. Those teams are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers

English Premier League Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies

Betting on the Premier League requires a plan. Some bettors feel more comfortable following an established betting system like the Kelly Criterion strategy. It’s also a good idea to have a budget in mind to make it easier to manage your bankroll. Beyond that, here are some general Premier League betting tips:

  • Recent form matters, including differences between home and away performances. One team might look better on paper, but if they are in the middle of a slump, they are less reliable.

  • With such a crowded schedule, rest is more important than ever. Teams that have to travel midweek for a European competition might be tired for a weekend Premier League game, especially if they don’t have a deep squad. Therefore, the amount of rest and travel a team has before a match can impact the result.

  • Injuries inevitably play a key role in games, especially if a team is missing an important player like their top scorer or their goalie.

  • The tactical style of each team and manager should be considered when betting. Certain teams match up better against other teams based on how they play. This is why looking at the head-to-head history between teams, as well as the head-to-head history of their managers, can offer key insights.
